Oral Surgery

Oral surgery is any surgical procedure performed in or around your mouth and jaw, typically by a dental specialist who has been trained to perform specific types of oral surgery.

Types of Oral Surgery

Oral surgery includes a variety of procedures, including tooth extraction and root canal therapy. Some oral surgeries involve jaw repositioning. In some cases, oral surgery may include the removal of a tumour. Oral surgeries can be performed by a variety of dental specialists, including endodontists, periodontists, and prosthodontists.

Common Types of Oral Surgery

The following are some of the most common dental and jaw surgeries:

  • Impacted wisdom teeth
Impacted wisdom teeth
Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure that removes one or more wisdom teeth, which are the four permanent adult teeth located at the top and bottom back corners of your mouth.
If a wisdom tooth does not have enough room to grow (an impacted wisdom tooth), causing pain, infection, or other dental problems, it will most likely need to be extracted. A dentist or an oral surgeon can perform wisdom tooth extraction.
Even if impacted teeth aren’t currently causing problems, some dentists and oral surgeons recommend wisdom tooth extraction to avoid potential future problems.

  • Gum grafting
Gum grafting
Gum graft surgery is a dental procedure used to treat thinning or receding gums. Gum grafting conceals exposed tooth roots and increases gum line volume, improving overall oral health. Recovery time is usually one to two weeks, but it can take longer. Gum grafting has a high success rate and can lower your risk of developing severe gum disease.

  • Dental implants
Dental implants
Dental implant surgery is a procedure that replaces damaged or missing teeth with artificial teeth that look and function similarly to natural teeth. Dental implant surgery can be a welcome alternative to ill-fitting dentures or bridgework, as well as an option when a lack of natural tooth roots prevents the construction of denture or bridgework tooth replacements.
The type of implant used and the condition of your jawbone determine how dental implant surgery is performed. Several procedures may be involved in dental implant surgery. The main advantage of implants is that they provide solid support for your new teeth, a process that requires the bone to heal tightly around the implant. Because bone healing takes time, the process can take months.

  • Root canal therapy
Root canal therapy
Root canal therapy, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental treatment used to remove infection from the inside of a tooth. It can also protect the tooth from future infections.
It is performed on the pulp of the tooth, which is known as the root canal.
Root canal therapy is used to remove nerves from the pulp of a tooth.
It is thought to be extremely painful, but it is a pain-relieving treatment.
Endodontic therapy is the medical term for the root canal procedure.
Root canal therapy costs vary, but it is less expensive than having a tooth extracted and replaced with a crown or bridge.

Smile Line Designing

It is not as simple as placing veneers or crowns on teeth that are whiter and brighter than the patient’s existing dentition to recreate a patient’s smile. A smile is an important reflection of oneself as well as a means of communicating various emotions to those around us, and it is unique to each individual. In fact, many factors must be carefully considered and evaluated in order to create a smile that is both aesthetically pleasing to the doctor and the patient.

Even with digital technology having a widespread impact on so many things, including restorative dentistry, and allowing for digital simulations of a patient’s final smile, the treating doctor must consider many factors and principles. Orthognathic surgery, periodontal surgery, cosmetic dentistry, oral surgery, and plastic surgery may all be required to achieve the perfect smile.

Similarly, if indirect restorations are part of the final treatment plan, the dental technician who will be performing the final restorations should be consulted early in the process as they can bring an invaluable component to assisting the clinician and patient in achieving the desired final result.
